01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Amid the midday bustle, a freshly fried horse mackerel set meal arrives at the table piping hot. The coating is crisp and fragrant, releasing steam with each bite to reveal the rich flavor of the fish. Accompanied by shredded cabbage, pickles, warm dashi-rich miso soup, and a generous bowl of fluffy rice, it makes for a thoroughly satisfying lunch.
Tucked away near Keio Nakadori in Shiba, Minato Ward, Yamasei is an unpretentious izakaya known for comforting everyday fare. On weekday lunchtimes, local office workers stream in, filling shared tables with a warm, nostalgic energy. Alongside the aji fry, the midday menu features hearty options like pork loin tonkatsu, crab cream croquettes, sashimi, and simmered mackerel in miso, giving diners plenty of choices depending on their appetite.
As evening sets in, the space shifts to a relaxed pub atmosphere. Chalkboards and wall strips display an array of fresh seafood dishes, from assorted sashimi platters to lightly cured shimesaba and yellowtail sashimi. Grilled specialties such as split alfonsino and yellowtail collar, alongside small bites like grilled stingray fin and plum-crystal cartilage, round out the drinks menu. Starting with a bottle of beer before moving to regional sakes such as Hitakami, Kagatobi, and Shichiken makes for an easygoing night out.
